October Workshops
Come and make something with us.
Our workshops are a chance to step away from the everyday and spend a little time creating. From clay and pressed flowers to terrariums, textiles and more, each session is hosted in the botanical surroundings of The Black Thistle.
We work with brilliant local artists and makers to bring you an ever-changing programme of workshops, alongside our own plant-filled sessions.
No experience needed. Curiosity encouraged.
Build your own miniature green world, layer by layer
In this hands-on session, you’ll create your own enclosed terrarium using carefully chosen plants, moss, stones, and layered soils — learning the foundations of planting, composition, and long-term care as you go.
Hosted in The Green Room at The Black Thistle, this workshop is designed as a calm, creative space to slow down and reconnect — with nature, with making, and with the simple pleasure of working with your hands.

Saturday 23rd October - 10.30am - 3.00pm
Learn the art of rolling and shaping clay to bring your unique visions to life. Using a former to build your base, you’ll have total creative freedom to sculpt a set of three perfectly formed Cottage Garden hanging planters —be they smart town house or run down cottages for a stunning, hand-painted display. Once finished, your tutor will dry, fire, and glaze your sculptures before delivering them back to The Black Thistle for you to collect.

Make Your Own Ceramic Christmas Decorations
Get festive with clay and create your own handmade ceramic Christmas decorations with Lynn Andrews of Larkbarrow Studio.
Choose from festive shapes including Christmas trees, stars and reindeer, then make them your own with patterns, textures and decoration. Each relaxed 30-minute session is perfect for complete beginners, with Lynn on hand to guide you through the process.
Visiting the Shepton Sunday Market? Pop in, escape the bustle of the stalls for half an hour and enjoy a little festive making in The Green Room at The Black Thistle.
At the end of the session, Lynn will take your decorations away to be dried, glazed and fired. They'll be returned to The Black Thistle ready for collection a couple of weeks later, just in time to add to your Christmas tree or give as a handmade gift.
